Examination
The CITB Health & Safety Awareness (HSA) exam is a straightforward, multiple-choice test taken at the very end of the one-day course. Here are the specific details you need to know.
Exam Format and Questions
The exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions and is a closed-book test, meaning you cannot refer to your course materials.
A key feature of the exam is that it includes three "safety critical" questions at the start of the paper. You must answer all three of these correctly to pass, regardless of your overall score.

Marks and Pass Mark
Each of the 25 questions is worth 1 mark, giving a total of 25 marks.
To pass the exam, you need to achieve a score of 20 out of 25, which is 80%.
Resit Information
If you don't pass on your first attempt, there is a clear resit policy:
- If you score 18 or 19 out of 25 (72-76%): You are eligible for a resit, either on the same day or by attending another course within 90 days.
- If you score 17 or less (68% or below): You must attend the full HSA course again before you are allowed to resit the exam.
- If you fail the safety critical questions: Even if you achieve the 80% pass rate, you will need to resit the exam if you answered any of the three safety critical questions incorrectly.
Certification
Successful learners will receive a CITB Health and Safety Awareness Certificate.
