SSSTS Card – What You Really Receive After the Course

SSSTS Card – What You Really Receive After the Course

There is a lot of confusion around what learners actually receive after completing the SSSTS course. At Highaimstraining, we are often asked whether there is an official SSSTS card, if the certificate comes with a CSCS watermark, and how the qualification links with the gold CSCS card. To clear up these common misunderstandings, this guide explains exactly what you receive after training and how the SSSTS course fits into your journey towards becoming a site supervisor.

Is There an SSSTS Card?

Despite the amount of discussion online, an SSSTS card does not exist. The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme is a recognised CITB course, but it only issues a certificate, not a physical or digital card. The confusion usually comes from the connection between the SSSTS certificate and the CSCS gold card for supervisors, as both are essential for supervisory roles in the UK construction industry.

How the SSSTS Helps You Become a Site Supervisor

The SSSTS course is one of the most popular routes for workers looking to step into supervisory roles. Your SSSTS certificate shows that you understand site safety at a supervisory level, while the gold CSCS card proves you have the right technical qualifications. Some employers may hire you with strong experience and just one of these, but most prefer both. To stand out, you’ll also need practical experience such as shadowing existing supervisors, taking on small leadership tasks, and showing readiness to take responsibility on-site.

How the Gold CSCS Card Connects to SSSTS

The gold CSCS card is designed for workers who already operate at supervisor or advanced craft level. To qualify, you usually need an NVQ/SVQ Level 3 or Level 4 in a construction-related supervisory subject. If you do not yet hold one of these qualifications, completing the SSSTS course is often the first step towards this supervisory pathway. Many learners complete SSSTS while working towards their NVQ so they can meet the requirements for the gold card.

Where the SSSTS Course Is Delivered

The SSSTS course is delivered by CITB and approved training providers such as Highaimstraining. CITB runs courses at their National Construction Training Centres in Norfolk, Kent, and Suffolk. However, learners often find it more convenient to complete the course locally through accredited providers. It is important to ensure the provider is CITB-approved, as only recognised centres can issue valid SSSTS certificates.

What the SSSTS Training Covers

The SSSTS course runs over two days and includes a combination of group discussions, case studies, presentations and independent study. The programme helps supervisors understand their legal responsibilities and teaches practical ways to maintain a safe site. Key learning areas include:

health and safety legislation and how it affects site supervisors
risk assessments and method statements
how to supervise site activity effectively
leading toolbox talks, site inductions and daily briefings
intervening safely when poor practice is identified

Why Take the SSSTS Course?

Construction health and safety standards are constantly evolving, and employers want supervisors who understand current legislation and can keep sites compliant. Completing the SSSTS course ensures you have up-to-date knowledge and are well-prepared for the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test required for the gold CSCS card. With construction accidents remaining a major concern across the UK, having the right training is essential for protecting both workers and management.

Cost of the SSSTS Course

The SSSTS course costs £305. Some employers cover the cost, and CITB also offers grants for eligible companies. It’s always worth checking with your employer or the CITB website if financial support is available.

How Long Your SSSTS Certificate Lasts

Once you complete the course, you’ll receive a Site Safety Plus certificate, commonly referred to as the SSSTS certificate. This remains valid for five years. Before the certificate expires, you must complete the SSSTS Refresher Course to maintain your qualification. The refresher updates you on changes in legislation, best practice and supervisory responsibilities. If you let your certificate expire, you will need to retake the full SSSTS course.

How to Apply for the Gold CSCS Card

To apply for a gold CSCS card, you must meet the qualification requirements and pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. The test lasts 45 minutes and includes 50 multiple-choice questions on workplace safety, environmental responsibilities, high-risk tasks and legal duties. The certificate remains valid for two years. Once passed, you can apply for your gold CSCS card online or by phone. Most applicants receive their physical card within 3–10 working days, and a digital version is instantly available on the My CSCS app.

Is SSSTS Enough for a Gold Card?

While the SSSTS certificate is an important part of supervisory training, it does not replace the NVQ qualification required for the gold CSCS card. Instead, it supports your learning, prepares you for the health and safety test, and demonstrates your commitment to professional development. Many supervisors complete SSSTS as part of their pathway towards achieving the full gold card requirements.
