Who Should Take This Course?
This Advanced Safeguarding Children course is suitable for anyone whose job role involves frequent or regular work with children and/or their families. This includes workers at all levels, including managers, supervisors, full-time and part-time staff.
This Level 2 Safeguarding Children course is written at an advanced level and contributes towards increasing and maintaining your existing safeguarding knowledge. If you require an entry-level training course that requires no previous knowledge then we recommend taking our Introduction to Safeguarding Children (Level 1 Safeguarding) Training.
Certification
On successful completion of the course you will be sent a quality assured certificate through the post the next working day. This can be used to provide evidence for compliance and audit.
Course Content

| 1 | Introduction to Safeguarding | Defining safeguarding, statistics, Victoria Climbié, Peter Connolly, what the law says and your responsibilities. |
| 2 | The Safeguarding Structure | The single assessment process, low level needs, emerging needs, complex needs, child protection concerns and which stage is appropriate. |
| 3 | Identifying Abuse | Categories of child abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, the Children Act 1989, children in need and significant harm. |
| 4 | Recognising Risks | Where risks come from, factors that increase risk, recognising high risk situations and assessing whether a child is at risk from harm. |
| 5 | Reporting Your Concerns | How and when to report a concern, who to report to, checking existing records, talking to the child’s parents, how referrals to social care are made, following up a referral, social care’s decision and what to do if you disagree with the decision. |
| 6 | What Happens After a Referral | Early Help Assessments, statutory assessments under the Children Act 1989, the strategy discussion, Section 47 enquiries, Child Protection Conferences, Child Protection Plans, the review conference and discontinuing the plan. |
Aims of the Course
By the end of this course you will:
- Remember what is meant by ‘safeguarding’ and why learning about safeguarding children is so important.
- Refresh your knowledge about how to identify the indicators and warning signs of abuse.
- Understand which children are likely to be most at risk from abuse and know how to recognise and assess risks.
- Have knowledge of the role that social care plays in the safeguarding process.
- Know how a referral to social care is made and understand more about the possible responses to a referral.
- Have an awareness of the safeguarding structure and recognise the different levels of support a child may receive.
Understand what happens in the process after a referral is made, including information on assessments, the child protection conference and child protection plans.
